Pallet Rack Step Beams

Pallet Racking

Teardrop pallet rack step beams from 4′ to 12′ long with 3″ to 6″ faces, rated up to 9,989 lb per pair at 8′, new and used, stocked in Longwood, FL and Houston, TX.

Step beams are the horizontal load beams that span between upright frames. The 1.5″ step on the inner edge lets wire decking and pallet supports sit flush with the top of the beam. Each storage level uses one pair of beams, and beam length sets bay width.

Capacity depends on beam length, face height, steel thickness and connector. Our engineered step beams come in six face heights from 3″ to 6″ with 3-pin or 4-pin connectors, independently tested to ANSI MH16.1-2023, so every level we quote has a published rating. Custom lengths are available, and we also carry quality used beams.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call us at (386) 261-8959.

How much weight can an 8 foot pallet rack beam hold?

Per pair of 96″ (8′) beams, uniformly loaded: 3″ beam 3,019 lb; 4″ (0.063″) beam 4,481 lb; 4″ (0.071″) beam 4,931 lb; 4.5″ beam 5,790 lb; 5″ beam 6,727 lb; 5.5″ beam 7,738 lb; 6″ beam 9,989 lb (4-pin). Two 2,000 lb pallets (4,000 lb) need at least a 4″ beam.

How much weight can a 12 foot pallet rack beam hold?

Per pair of 144″ (12′) beams: 3″ beam 1,518 lb; 4″ (0.063″) beam 2,543 lb; 4″ (0.071″) beam 2,735 lb; 4.5″ beam 3,479 lb; 5″ beam 4,364 lb; 5.5″ beam 5,401 lb; 6″ beam 7,020 lb (4-pin). Long beams are limited by deflection, so a taller face matters more as length increases.

What is the difference between 3-pin and 4-pin beam connectors?

A 4-pin connector is stiffer, which adds capacity on shorter beams. A 4″ beam (0.063″) at 48″ is rated 8,081 lb with 3 pins and 8,373 lb with 4. On longer beams deflection governs, so the ratings converge: at 120″ both are 3,518 lb.

What do pallet rack beam capacity ratings assume?

Ratings are per pair of beams for static loads spread evenly across both beams. They are the lesser of bending strength or L/180 deflection, and include a 25% impact allowance for one pallet load from a 48″-wide pallet. Point loads, uneven loading or forklift impacts beyond that reduce safe capacity.

Do long pallet rack beams need extra bracing?

Yes. Cross-bracing is recommended for beams longer than 120″ (10′), and loads of 10,000 lb or more per beam pair should be reviewed by a design engineer.

Do you make custom length pallet rack beams?

Yes. Custom beam lengths are available in addition to the standard 4′ to 12′ sizes. Tell us the bay width you need and we’ll quote the beam and confirm its rated capacity per pair.

Will your beams fit my existing racking?

Our beams use teardrop connectors, compatible with most teardrop-style uprights. Send a photo of your upright hole pattern and we’ll confirm the fit.

What steel are your pallet rack beams made from?

Hot-rolled steel coil to IS 2062:2011, supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and certified to a minimum yield 350 MPa (51 ksi) and minimum tensile 410 MPa (59 ksi), at or above the 50 ksi (345 MPa) minimum the beam ratings are calculated on.

Can I get mill test certificates for the steel?

Yes. The steel is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates from BIS-licensed mills, documenting chemistry and lab-tested yield, tensile strength and elongation for each lot. Ask for copies with your quote. Inspectors and engineers often request them.
